For over two decades, New Prague Area Schools (NPAS) has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to inclusion through its adaptive sports programs. This year, that dedication was rewarded with a momentous achievement — the adaptive floor hockey team secured the state championship title, marking a milestone in the program’s storied history.
Head Coach Jeremy Kalal, who has been involved with the team since 2010, described this season as particularly special. “We had multiple kids who have been playing for years, and they had a lot of drive to finally win a state championship,” Kalal shared. “The past two seasons, we finished in second place at the state tournament. This year, they were hungry for redemption.”
Unlike teams that rely on one or two standout players, New Prague’s success was built on teamwork. Every player played a crucial role in their journey to the championship. Their collective perseverance was put to the test in the semifinal game when they fell behind early—a position they hadn’t been in all season. It was in that moment that the team’s growth and determination shone through. They fought their way back, proving that their desire to win matched their talent on the floor.
“The championship game was special, but honestly, I think the semifinal game said more about this team than anything else this season,” Kalal noted. “They had to work together, and they showed just how much they wanted it.”
New Prague’s adaptive sports program has always been about more than just competition — it’s about community. The support for the team was overwhelming throughout the season, especially at the state tournament. NPAS fans outnumbered those of any other school, filling the stands with parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, students, and community members. The team’s pep rally before the tournament was another testament to the school’s deep-rooted culture of inclusion and celebration.
“To see that many people show up for these kids is incredible,” Kalal said. “It was standing room only at times. This team has a big following, and it’s amazing to see them get the recognition they deserve.”
As the players held the championship trophy, the joy on their faces reflected not only their hard-fought victory but also the years of commitment and resilience that led them to that moment. New Prague’s adaptive floor hockey team has etched their names in school history, and their triumph is a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, teamwork, and the ongoing support of a community that truly shows up for its athletes.
