At New Prague High School, the choice of hands-on learning is an excellent pathway to opportunity. The high school’s trades department gives students real-world experience, practical skills, and the confidence to take on challenges during high school and beyond. Whether a student wants to work in the automotive or welding industry, or simply wants to learn how to fix their own equipment, the program provides a strong foundation.
Automotive instructor Mr. Baer explains that the mission of the department is to teach students the trades in a traditional, real-world way. The goal is to give students a set of skills that they can actually use, whether that’s for a future career or just everyday life. The automotive section currently offers three classes: Automotive I, Automotive II, and Consumer Car Care. The Auto I and II classes each run for one semester and dive into detailed learning with hands-on experience working on engines. Students learn to understand systems, use equipment, and practice in the shop. Consumer Car Care offers more of a general overview for the students who want to gain basic knowledge without the intensity of the full automotive pathway.
Introduction to Welding, taught by Mr. Lockhart, is another course offered within the trades department that enables students to apply themselves. Students begin with lessons on safety as well as foundational content before moving into hands-on practice. They learn all about processes, techniques, and welding, allowing students to build both skill and confidence through hands-on experience. For many students, these classes are more than just electives, they act as stepping stones to real jobs and real life situations. As of now, Intro to Welding is the only welding course Mr. Lockhart teaches, but he hopes to expand into a second level welding course as interests grow and opportunities arise.
Through the trades department, students learn skills that save money and build independence. The benefits of learning these essential skills can go beyond personal use: multiple students have gone on to start their own small businesses and pursue jobs in the trades, some gaining them immediately after graduation. Taking these courses allows students to have an advantage and head start for their future; both Mr. Baer and Mr. Lockhart emphasized the huge job outlook in these fields that their students may benefit from.
One aspect important to most students in these courses is the hands-on activities being done. The classes within the trades department consist of a mix of classroom learning, demonstrations, and hands-on work. Automotive students work on real vehicles in the shop, sometimes even their own. Students experience a more realistic workplace environment when interacting with their projects, which can strengthen their readiness if they choose to go into the industry.
The skills that students learn lead to real opportunities. Many trade industries across the country face shortages of skilled workers, so the need will always be present. New Prague’s trades department equips students with valuable skills, opens doors for future careers, and builds confidence through meaningful hands-on experience.
For students who enjoy working with their hands, solving problems, or learning how things work, the trades department offers a strong, practical, and rewarding experience.
