School Counselor Role
School Counselors assist students with academic development, educational and career planning, as well as personal, emotional and behavioral concerns. Our purpose is to empower all learners to lead satisfying and productive lives by supporting them in identifying and achieving educational, career, personal and social goals. School Counselors provide developmental, pro-active, preventative and remedial services for students, working cooperatively with students, staff members, parents, and the community.
- Is actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests and talents, as these traits relate to career awareness and development.
- Help parents/guardians focus on ways to further the education, personal and social growth of students.
- Work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potential and set realistic goals for themselves.
- Seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and compliment comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society.
School Social Worker Role
School Social workers are trained mental health professionals who provide direct and indirect services to students experiencing social, emotional and behavioral problems that interfere with their performance in school. School Social workers also work with families, teachers and administrators, and outside service agencies.
- Serves primarily Special Education Students
- Links Parents and families with community supports
- Provides individual and group support
- Consult with school staff and administrators on how to best support students in the classroom and the building
- Provides crisis intervention to students
- Works with students on areas such as self-advocacy, bullying, mental health, social skills, and problem solving.
- Collaborates with outside providers to help provide supports to students in school
Confidentiality Limitations
Our team values and respects the right of confidentiality of our students and the families we work with. However, there are limitations to confidentiality which are mandated by law. These circumstances include:
- If there is reason to believe the student is in danger of harming themselves.
- If the student reveals they are the victims of current abuse (physical, emotional, sexual) or neglect.
- If the student expresses concern that another individual is in danger of harming themselves.
- If a court orders a release of information.
- If a request for release of information to an outside agency is completed by the family.
- If a student gives us permission to share.
